TY students attended the Young SVP Conference in the ILAS centre in NUIG. The students enjoyed a presentation and interactive performance by Youth advocate Kevin Akpaloo. Representatives from Dublin’s ‘Secret Street Tours’ described how they have set up a walking tour of Dublin City given by tour guides who experienced first hand the problem of homelessness. The tours provide both an insight into the history of Dublin and the issues surrounding the problem of homelessness in the city today. Finally 23 year old disability activist Joanne O’ Riordan gave an inspiring and humours speech about the importance of using your mind and voice to bring about change. Joanne is one of seven people in the world today born with Tetra-amelia Syndrome and described how she has overcome challenges in her life by focusing on her ability rather than her disability. It was a pleasure to meet such a truly amazing young lady.
