At Our Lady’s College Galway we work hard to provide the best learning opportunities for all our students. We expect our students to work hard, behave well and take responsibility for their learning. Our curriculum is broad and designed to ensure that every student reaches their maximum potential.
OLCG offers a very vibrant Music & Art Program in the school with both Music & Art offered to Leaving Certificate level. Music & Art are offered to all students in 1st Year.
No subject choices are required to be made until such time as the students have studied them for a period of time first. This is in line with best educational practice nationally (NCCA). There is a strong emphasis on the use of IT in Music Technology at both Junior Certificate & Leaving Certificate levels.
OLCG is a multi lingual school with a strong emphasis on the cultural identity of all our students but with a particular emphasis on fluency and communication through English and An Ghaeilge.
OLCG – Involvement with Seachtain na Gaeilge – Annual Quiz Boird & Céilí.
OLCG offers a choice of three European Languages to it’s students who will have the choice to study French or Spanish or German to Leaving Certificate Level.
Science, Technology & Mathematics are offered to all students in 1st year in OLCG. Science is a core subject on the curriculum. At senior cycle all three laboratory science subjects are offered – Biology, Chemistry & Physics. Technology will be available as an option for the Transition Year Students too.
Galway is a hub for RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT in the BioMedical Industries and Our Lady’s College Galway will have a role to play in offering a wide choice of subjects and co curricular experiences to students to become part of the next generation of people involved in this burgeoning industry.
Our Lady’s College Galway is very conscious of the importance of the effective use of Information Technology in Teaching & Learning. OLCG has the highest Broadband Speeds available through the latest Department of Education Initiative – 100MBit/S. The provision of WiFi in the school to allow internet access for both students & teachers will facilitate the use of ICT in classes.
CODING for SECOND LEVEL STUDENTS will continue. Coding as a short course in the new Junior Cycle is currently being piloted in some schools and will be made available shortly in all schools, including in OLCG.
The increased use of IT and IT Training will be available to all students in OLCG in line with the best practice in Irish second Level education.
OLCG has strong links with local businesses such as IBM through initiatives like Business in theCommunity. LCVP Students are offered mentoring programmes through the dedication & generosity of the local staff in these companies, guest speakers are invited and share their expertise on their own business successes and they are given interview preparation workshops, the provision of Work Shadowing and Work Experience placements etc.
All Transition Year and 5th Year Students will be given the invaluable opportunity to participate in the Work Experience Programme in OLCG. Prior to the placements, all students will be given training in Work Preparation, Interview Techniques and The World of Work through a joint Career Guidance & Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme LCVP – Working for Life Programme.
